Éducathèque is a publisher and online retailer of educational materials for teachers and parents. The catalogue includes some resources published by Éducathèque, the series La Planète des Alphas which it exclusively distributes in North America, and a range of other educational products.

In 2013, Éducathèque undertook a major change in how it distributes its own material, which will only be available in digital format. An iTunes application serves as shop, reader and publisher. At the same time a decision was made to ramp up the promotion of the popular Alphas series, which was a little cramped in the existing Magento website. The client’s outline involved a promotional site for the new application, a promotional site for the Alphas series, and an online shop for the Alphas and the remainder of the materials, all grouped under an umbrella site.

We came in to build these four sites. We convinced the client that there were two sites too many in the plan. If the online store was meant only to sell the Alphas series, the store and the promotional material should be grouped on one site. They could keep the old site temporarily online to liquidate the additional stock. With only two sub-sites, the umbrella site would also be redundant. That leaves them with one site dedicated to La Planète des Alphas and another to the Éducathèque application.

For the application site, we integrated a WordPress theme by designer Joseph Décarie. All the content is grouped on a single page, using many scrolling effects and product carousels. An internal navigation system allows the creation of a link to a hidden item on a carousel: the page scrolls first, then the carousel moves to the desired item. The content is fully managed by custom content types.
